6 Common Reasons Married Couples Get Divorced

January 31, 2022

You may have recently heard of statistics that prove that cases of divorces are on the rise in the US. This is in stark contrast to a few decades ago when the idea of divorce had some stigma attached to it, so couples tended to stick together even if things weren't as rosy. Today's society is more liberated, and divorce doesn't raise as much concern as it used to. That means divorce attorneys are busier than ever, as more married couples identify reasons not to stay together. Below we will look at the common reasons behind divorce cases handled by most divorce attorneys.

Marrying Too Young

According to Farzadlaw.com, about 45% of couples pointed to "marrying too young" as a reason for divorce. When couples marry while they are too young, they are often too immature to consider compatibility issues. That means as they start to mature, they may eventually grow apart and develop incompatible personalities. This explains why so many couples cite the reason for divorce as irreconcilable differences. When couples drift apart as they develop into fully matured adults, they may discover that they don't share the same values, interests, and outlook on life. They may also not be sexually compatible, which is more the reason for divorcing.

Lack of Commitment

The majority of divorces are caused by a simple lack of commitment. If one or both partners are not committed enough, they will sign up for divorce at the earliest sign of a problem. Lack of commitment means there's no willingness to put in the work required to save the marriage and keep it healthy. This can result in other behaviors that damage the marriage, such as infidelity and refusal to communicate. In most instances, there's not much that can be done to cure the lack of commitment in a marriage, making divorce necessary.

Financial Problems

Financial problems are one of the common reasons married couples engage divorce attorneys. If the couple has many arguments about money, they are financially incompatible. Financial problems that lead to divorce are more likely to occur in low-income households where every cent counts, and mismanagement of finances can lead to stressful situations. So if the couple can't agree over major financial decisions, such as buying a house or saving for retirement, they are more likely to keep fighting over finances. Sometimes one partner can create problems by being secretive about purchases and hiding major financial decisions happening on their end. If the other partner is not consulted before a major financial decision is made, this can cause more fights that eventually lead to divorce.

Communication Problems

Communication is the backbone of any healthy relationship or marriage. So it makes sense that married couples are more likely to divorce if there's poor communication. Poor communication leads to many arguments and misunderstandings. This, in turn, leads to resentment, frustration, and hostility, which is all detrimental to the couple's union. The issues will continue to worsen if not addressed, and before you know it, one or both partners are looking for divorce attorneys.

Infidelity

Infidelity is one of the most common causes of divorce, and again, divorce cases tend to deal with many cases involving extramarital affairs. The problem with infidelity is that it creates trust issues within the relationship that can be very difficult to repair. While some couples can stay together even after discovering infidelity, these trust issues can continue to fester and may cause other problems that lead to divorce.

Physical, Emotional, and Substance Abuse

Physical and emotional abuse can cause an irreparable rift between partners. That's because it causes a huge disconnect. In most instances, women are more vulnerable to domestic abuse and often cite abuse as the reason for divorce. Similarly, couples will divorce because one or both of them have substance abuse problems. For instance, severe drug or drinking problems can cause extreme changes in behavior that cannot be tolerated by the other partner. These behavioral changes can include anything from excessive mood swings and personality shifts to the neglect of responsibilities and poor hygiene.

These are the common reasons for divorce cases that many divorce attorneys come across. When alternatives like marriage counseling and relationship education have failed, most married couples will resort to separation and divorce. Sometimes the divorce is amicable, but too often, the cases are complicated. This is where divorce attorneys come in. Divorce is never smooth sailing, but the right attorney can make navigating the process easier.
